Follow the steps below on how to create a data connection using a USB cable on Windows 7 for the Iridium 9505A.
Step 1: Install the USB-to-Serial converter driver
- Download the USBRS232.ZIP file from this article.
- Locate the "Windows" file.
- Double click on the "Setup" file.
- Click on the "Next" button, the software will install.
- Specify the COM port that the adapter will use, make note of it, it will be needed for the Iridium modem installation.
- Click on the "Finish" button to complete the installation.
Step 2: Create a dial-up modem
- Click on the Start menu.
- Type in “Phone and Modem” in the start menu search bar, press enter.
- Click the “Modems” tab.
- Click on the “Add” button.
- A UAC window will pop up requesting permission, click on “Continue”.
- Check off “Don’t detect my modem; I will select it from a list”.
- Click on “Standard Modem Types” under the Manufacturer pane.
- Click on “Standard 19200 bps modem” under the models pane.
- Click on the “Next” button.
- Click on the same COM port number that was recorded in step 1.
- Click on the “Next” button once the COM port has been selected.
- Windows will install the modem and return a successful result, click the “Finish” button.
Step 3: Create a dial-up networking connection
- Click on the Start menu.
- Click on the “Control panel” icon.
- Click the “Network and Sharing Centre” icon.
- Click the “Set up a connection or network” link.
- Click on “Set up a dial-up connection” and press the “Next” button.
- Click on the “Standard 19200 bps Modem” and click on the “Next" button.
- Enter 008816000025 in the “Dial-up phone number” field.
- Enter “Iridium” in the “Connection name” field.
- Click on the “Connect” button.
- The computer will attempt a data call right away, click on the “Skip” button.
- Press the “Close” button.
